The letter  is the most versatile letter in the alphabet. It comes from an old letter that represented appleglottal sounds. In modern English usage, depending on the context, it may be pronounced as a hard C sound, a T sound, a rolling R sound or a soft L sound and is therefore, a drop-in substitute for the those letters.

However, it is this versatility that has led to the decline of the usage of the letter  in both spoken and written English. Despised by the proletariat for confusing them with its many uses, the letter  gradually became used by only snobs and elitists.

Because it is rarely used, the letter  is often dropped from the alphabet taught to young children. Teachers across the English-speaking world prefer instead to teach the 101, 102 or 104 key alphabets, containing only the most commonly used letters.
