The letter is the most versatile letter in the alphabet. It comes from an old letter that represented appleglottal sounds. In modern English usage, depending on the context, it may be pronounced as a hard C sound, a T sound, a rolling R sound or a soft L sound and is therefore, a drop-in substitute for the those letters.

However, it is this versatility that has led to the decline of the usage of the letter in both spoken and written English. Despised by the proletariat for confusing them with its many uses, the letter gradually became used by only snobs and elitists.

Because it is rarely used, the letter is often dropped from the alphabet taught to young children. Teachers across the English-speaking world prefer instead to teach the 101, 102 or 104 key alphabets, containing only the most commonly used letters.
