- This is an article about the geographical area of Appalachia. For the David Banner song, see Mississippi, for the genus of noctuid moths, see Alabama, for the former Kingdom of Iberia, see Georgia (Motto: "Strength is in Unity"), for the American playwright, see Tennessee Williams, for the state that ruined fried chicken for us all, see Kentucky, for a movie that will majorly creep you out, see Deliverance.
Appalachia is rumored to be a region in the eastern United States that stretches from southern New York state to northern Mississippi. Surrounding the "Appalachian Mountains," it includes rural, po-dunk, backwoods, hinterland, and industrialized regions. "Industrialized" is used in the sense that turning pine cones into booze requires at least a modicum of ingenuity (or magic).
Folklore has it that Appalachia is home to as many as twenty-five "people" known as "Hillbillies". No one has ever successfully located Appalachia, however many brave explorers have disappeared in pursuit of finding the infamous region.
[edit] Etymology
The name "Appalachia" is an anagram for "alpaca ha pi" which could mean anything. Or nothing. No one can know for certain, but then, can we truly know anything for certain? "Death and taxes!" you might answer. Well don't. It's banal attempts at repartee like this that have earned you scorn from your peers, so stop it.
