Atko is a coloquial slang term for extreme anger generally directed at a stereotyped group or individual. It originates from the surname of Mr Atkinson, who is renowned for his outbursts of extreme rage at often inappropriate moments. People in close contact with him soon became accustomed to this behaviour and before long had coined the phrase 'to do an Atko' which quickly became shortened to 'an Atko'. It is also common practise to refer to an enraged individual as 'Atko'. For example: 'Oi! Atko! Why don't you shut the hell up?' or 'Atko, he only stole one doughnut from your fridge - its been 3 weeks now, isn't it time we let him out and fed him?'. All groups of people can be objects of this sort of rage, but the term is most commonly applied when the subjects of the anger are: women drivers, chavs, French people, nerds, people who steal food from fridges, people grossly incompetent at their role.

In a relatively short period of time - less than one generation - the term has become widely used and incorporated into many dialects around the world. The speed at which the term established itself is the subject of intense debate within linguistic circles that has yet to be resolved. There is currently no real explanation for this although many believe ‘Atko’ is an innately 'angry' word and the sound when spoken (or yelled as is most common) seems to best convey the intense anger felt by the speaker. In addition to Atko other slang terms have propelled themselves into common dialect, one such notable example, directly related to the term Atko is the term atkophobia, which although less commonly used than Atko, is becoming more common as the term Atko continues to become more popular.
