The Buick Lightsabre was an automobile built from 1978 to 1999 by Darth Motors Corporation in Lansing, Michigan.

Road, Track and Jedi magazine's review of the 1981 Lightsabre gave it praise such as "cuts through traffic like a hot knife through butter." The major feature of the vehicle was the ionic plasma system built into the front bumper, which caused a bright glow to build up in front of the vehicle... and , incidently, allow the driver to instantaniously disrupt anything the front bumper touched.

DMC ended the production of this vehicle with the 1999 model year, citing "Unresolvable Y2k Issues" as the reason a 2000 model was not produced.

History:

The Lightsabre varient first appeared as the DMC was in decline. Expenses for construction of the new "Auto Star" assembly line had impacted the company's bottom line. Concept work on the Lightsabre was done under the code name "A New Hope" and later under the code "Episode IV."

The first production runs were made on the same assembly line as the "Buick Skywalker" , a more entry-level vehicle primarly used by hick farmboys to drive around in the desert and shoot rats from the window.

From 1978 to 1983, the Lightsabre was powered by a mark 364 power converter, easily purchased at the local Tachi Station. This converter produced 250 horsepower using monoatomic hydrogen, or could be run cheaply on Evian at 235 horsepower. This was later upgraded to a mark 401 power converter for 300 'taun-taunpower'.

The electrical system for the vehicle was an anomoly for an American-made car, since it was subcontracted to Lucas Electric of the UK. This was a major financial boon for Lucas, a point not lost on the management of the Darth Motor Co. In a public statement in 1984, Darth DeLoriean commented on this to a degree that may have been out of bounds of public taste by saying: "Who's your daddy, you little limey 'lectrician? Lucas, I AM your father!"

In 1993, an option package was added, allowing buyers to get an uprated Buick Lightsabre. The THX package brought the vehicle up to minimal standards for Pod Racing by adding two GE turbofan engines and an ejection seat to the standard convertable. Many racers further modified the vehicle to mount a USAF-surplus JATO module in the trunk. This practice was common place on racing Lightsabres until the well publicized "cliffside incident" in 1997.
