I was once known as the Fifth Beatle. This is my favorite album!

~ Mid on Clowns For Sale

This album sucked so much, that I stuck it into my butt cheeks, farted, and swirled. Oh yeah, I swirled.

~ Oscar Wilde on Clowns for Sale

Can't sleep, clowns for ale will eat me!

~ Bart Simpson on Clowns for Sale

Clowns For Sale was The Beatles' 1964 album. It was their fourth official studio album.

It is considered by many a clown to be the worst album in rock and roll history.

It's rumoured that in '64 folk-artists like Bob Dylan added a lot of 'Clowns' in their lyrics for no good reason, that may have influenced a lot of the titles on this album. The term 'my friend' was also popular; Lennon once suggested the title "Clown, My Friend", but this was considered to be silly.

[edit] Ouch!

When Clowns For Sale was regarded as one of the worst albums in rock music history, Starr, Harrison, McCartney, and Lennon set out to make a better, stronger album. They wanted to escape the Clown genre once and for all. It would take a year, and feelings would be hurt in the process, but the result was worth it. In the spring of 1965, the band released their smash hit album, Ouch! The album quickly reached a number one spot on the charts, and with the embarrassing flop Clowns For Sale behind them, the band continued to produce hit albums.
