Born to dirt poor, dirt farming parents on the outskirts of Dirt Clod, Kansas in 1937, young Frank was determined to make something of himself. His second grade teacher, Miss Ellie Dunstall, recalls that Frank always provided verbal guidance in her classes, often describing the entire luncheon menu, with particular emphasis on the freshness of vegetables.
In 1943, Frank's parents moved to Southern California, following the dust trail from the midwest to the Pacific coast in search of fame, fortune and fresh vegetables.
