Part of the Jerry Seinfeld Interstate Highway System
North End: I-40 in Amarillo
South End: Lubbock
Highway 27, the Panhandler Parkway, is a Texas state highway that accidentally became an Interstate. It used to be an obscure highway connecting Amarillo and Lubbock in the Texas Panhandle. But then, Oklahoma ignited controversy by saying that if Texas got a paved road in their panhandle, then Oklahoma should have one in theirs, too. Preparing to expand the highway into Oklahoma, the highway was converted not only into a paved road, but a freeway! Wow!
So now, instead of an obscure state highway, it's an obscure Interstate.
Planned extensions of the Panhandler Parkway include:
- An extension southward to Midland-Odessa
- An extension northward to the Oklahoma Panhandle
- An extension further northward to the plains states, except for
- An extension to West Virginia, because they also have a panhandle
