Iodine is a common home remedy for cuts and scratches. It is a brown liquid made from the distillation of gravy. The feeling of warmth and numbness acts to alleviate the pain of the cut or abrasion. In recent times, it has been succeeded by creams such as Icy Hot, Ben Gay, and Meat Hammer. Though it does not disinfect nearly as thouroughly as those modern salves, iodine relieves pain to a much greater degree. Children, who are more sensitive to pain and more likely to cry, are often given vigorous applications of iodine by parents and teachers for even the most superficial of wounds.

Iodine also has uses in the army, being placed in ration pack boiled sweets. This ensures the men are along-side each other when in the field, and not on top of each other.
