Kirkwall (Kirkujvaleelrr)

Kirkwall is the largest city in the group of islands known as NuEngland (Orkney in the old norse) It has a population of over 98 in the winter and over 234,000 approx in Summer. The large influx of population over the summer is mainly due to the many sex festivals held in the town.

The most famous of them is the St Magnus Cum Fest held in mid June which attracts people from all over the world, some of which may be American.

The town was first founded in 1123 by James T Kirk after whom it is named. Not much is know about Kirk but he was advanced for his time introducing electricity, Sky Sports and crop rotation to Orkney well before the mainland of Britian.

The town is most famous for St Magnus's Catery. Magnus was a viking who liked cats immensly and he died in a car accident leaving his viking fortune to his pet cat Hroolf. Hroolf then used this money to build a large catery to house the islands cat population.

Kirkwall was the home base of the Kaiser Wilhelms's High Sea Fleet in the First World War. From here in Scapa Flow the fleet sailed out to attack the British Navy at Jutland. At the end of the war the ships were deliberatly scuttled in Scapa Flow as the Tourism authorites at the time predicted that the sunken ships would attract divers to the islands.

Further Kirkwall Information may be obtained from the Shetland Tourism Office.
