A Mark Knopfler being worn by the guitarist from Dire Straits.

Mark Knopfler, or 'the Knopple' is the name of a type of headband manufactured in the 1980s in Newcastle. It was at first unpopular, and only worn by tennis players, mechanics, and young girls. However, its popularity increased exponentially when it was seen being worn by several rock musicians, including the frontman of Dire Straits, whose name history has not recorded. Many others have since worn the Knopple, until the David Beckham came into fashion in the mid-90s and millions of men decided that plastic semi-circles were the way to hold their girly hair in place.
