The peanut butter and jelly sandwich, invented by Robert Peanut and Jim Butterandjelly, has long been known as one of mankind's greatest culinary inventions.

In its purest state, it consists of two slices of white bread (no whole wheat, rye, pumpernickel or otherwise wholesome bread, damn hippies) upon which approximately 1 - 2 tablespoons of peanut butter (smooth or crunchy) is spread on one side. The other slice of bread receives approximately the same amount of jelly. Purists or traditionalists will insist on grape jelly, though anything that is in the red/purple dye group will work just fine. The slices are then put together, gooey sides together and voila--- the sandwich is created. Cut the sandwich in half or in quarters if feeding young children or vagrants. Warning: sandwich does not travel well. After several hours in a brown bag, you will find that the jelly has a tendency to bleed through the bread. This can be avoided by putting a skim coat of peanut butter on the jelly side before spreading the jelly.

Popular variations on the PBJ include the peanut butter and marshmallow sandwich, also known as the fluffernutter, peanut butter and banana, and the jelly doughnut. The most popular variation however, is the BJ, which uses no bread, peanut butter or jelly (but you can add it if you want to, baby)
