Top Gun

Top Gun was a 1986 gay pornographic film starring Tom Cruise as Lieutenant Peter "Maverick" Mitchell. It was screened to the MPAA early, and though the makers lobbied for an R rating, the association refused to lower its NC-17 label, calling the film, in its notes, "perhaps the most abhorrent and utterly disgusting mix of scenes of aircraft in flight and man sex that we've ever had the misfortune of laying our scarred eyes upon". The studio decided to release the film unrated, and it opened to nearly $30 million in sales the first weekend, making it one of the highest-grossing films ever at the time. Coincidentally, that weekend marked a nearly 900% jump in reported incidents of eye scarring.
