How do you create and post your own templates? --4n7i-h4xx0r 01:47, 9 July 2007 (UTC)4n7i-h4xx0r

Firstly, make sure that you really need a template; there are very few good uses for templates. If you want to make up a fancy template but you're only going to use it on one page, it's better to just edit the page directly. If you have something that you want to put on a whole set of pages and you're certain that it's going to actually be funny and not stupid, then a template is what you want. If you really want a template then create a page at Template:NameOfYourTemplate, which includes all of your template's code Then, on the pages you want to include the template on, put {{NameOfYourTemplate}} where you would like the template included. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 12:53, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

I'm starting to get it. But there is a lot of code involved. I'll try experimenting with some templates using something like Notepad, then placing test ones on my profile. It'll be some time before I get the hang of it. Thanks anyway! 4n7i-h4xx0r 22:53, 9 July 2007 (UTC)4n7i-h4xx0r

Here's a test one I made:

Extinction.png.png Reading this crap has overheated the planet's core.

You have 3 seconds to live.

It sucks, so don't rub it in. I just basically took a code off another template and added a new image and text. Like i said, I'll get the hang of it. 4n7i-h4xx0r 23:17, 9 July 2007 (UTC)4n7i-h4xx0r

That's pretty much what everyone else does until they get the hang of it. If you want a free place to play around, you can make things in your userspace (a la User:4n7i-h4xx0r/Something ) without worrying about annoying anyone or getting things deleted. You can even include things as templates from your userspace (a la {{User:4n7i-h4xx0r/Something}} ). --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 12:30, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Also, I'm trying to place an animated image on this site, one that I made, but how do I do that? It's a .gif file, I know that, but it always opens with Photo Editor. Which program do I need, or what steps do I need to take? The animation is done, but I just need to figure out how to actually post a working animation. 4n7i-h4xx0r 00:39, 11 July 2007 (UTC)4n7i-h4xx0r

Actually, never mind on that last one. It took me a while, but here it is. It's short and simple. 4n7i-h4xx0r 05:11, 11 July 2007 (UTC)4n7i-h4xx0r

Zana Dark was banned???

Hi your most Adminibleness. I noticed that you banned Zana Dark. That's a bit harsh! Not cos of me I hope! What did she/he do "Being a dick" seams a bit general!!! MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 21:40, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

No, it is not because of you. Check ban patrol and her block log for the case against her. It's a one week ban, which is enough time to consider things but not too much to be mean. She needs to learn that editing other people's personal correspondences and vandalizing user pages is not acceptable. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif
Oh, ok... Although im new, I was able to see what was going on with the reverts on my talk page, and was not bothered by it at all (was quite funny actually)... I guess there is some kinda "contest" or somthing to see who can 'addopt' the most n00bs and I think she was actually right in that I spoke to her first rather than the other dude, but i'm sure u know what your doing. MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 22:09, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Whatever the context, claiming someone else's comments as her own is not acceptable, even if it is a form introduction. She should have left another comment underneath saying something else. Also, from a practical standpoint, the principle of helping new users is good but the principle of claiming ownership over new users is bad; we're about community, not warring factions. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 22:19, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Think I understand what your saying, I was just wanting to make sure that non got the idea that it was a problem, if ya look at Zanas talk page where I left the "Okay you can stop that" comment someone did take it more seriously than I intended (and I think she did too)... Malcolm Hardee

Re: 21:28, 11 November 2007 Gwax (Talk | contribs) huffed "Malcolm Hardee" (1.3 Uncyclopedia is not Wikipedia)

Well, as the facts in the piece were fake, but written as if true, I rather thought the entry was nothing like Wikipedia but - having said that - I suppose that would indeed make the fake entry pure Wikipedia.... --The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talk • contribs)

Ah, I compared your article to the wikipedia article and at first glance noticed no difference (a bad sign). On further, later inspection, I notice that you have copied the wikipedia article and replaced words with different words in an attempt to make an inaccurate version of the wikipedia article (generally frowned upon). Since these appear to be your only edits, I'm going to assume that you haven't been around here long and thought this would be a good place to poke fun at this Malcolm Hardee person, which it is. However, we strive (although often are less successful than we would like) to achieve a certain level of originality and quality, both of which were absent from your Malcolm Hardee article. Let me suggest that you look around our site for a while first, read some articles, see if you can make them better and once you have the hang of our style, then consider writing your own articles. I highly recommend reading our Beginner's Guide especially the On Good Writing section. It might also be a good idea to register an account and separate yourself from all the other random IP addresses, it will make other users more friendly. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 22:10, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

A comment on the n00b process by n00by boy

Having been unable to get the wieilderbeist to part with any of his hard earned cash I though that I might make a comment on the n00b introduction article. I was hoping there would be something there about managing your own userspace, and setting up user sandboxes, but was unable to find anything in the help about it, the link to the Uncyclopedia:Sandbox page on the help page did not help too much either! As I guess it's a rather important think to stop the likes of us n00bs from messing with the main namespace (like I did by mistake making "MrN9000/sandbox") might I suggest that something about this process be added to the guide? MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 23:06, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

I'm glad to hear that your intentions are in the right place; that's really the most important part. That said, I'm already more than well aware of how poor the introductory pages are and I'm hoping that we can do something about that someday. For right now, the best way to find out how to do something is to find a friendly someone that knows and just ask. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 23:29, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

about vandalism reporting

i've reported two stupid ip vandalising Bat Fuck Insane, and you said, that you can't see the difference, but if you check this, you can see that one was doubled the page and in this, that the other inserted random bullshit. Well I think its vandalism. --Drhlajos 21:18, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I guess that I could have been a bit more explicit about what I meant. My figuring was that Bat Fuck Insane is of such a nature that determining whether those were vandalism or not is incredibly difficult and subjective. If you think that it's vandalism, the correct response is to rollback the changes and then, if there is repeat vandalism, go to ban patrol. Even the article doubling isn't without precedent (Redundancy). I'm sorry not to have been more explicit but ban patrol really should not be the first approach to something like that. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 23:26, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

A beest in the Dark?

Ok, my (conscience ridden) pet wildebeest did not allow me to get a wink of sleep last night due to him constantly poking and prodding me in the ribs until I promised that I would "speak up" again regarding the banning of "Zana Dark". Both myself and the fore mentioned grassland mammal agree that I will almost certainly be talking out of turn so please forgive me, I'm very new here and have no idea what's considered acceptable behavior and what's not. I am however most certainly not new to the Internet, the concepts chat rooms and also the art of "being a dick" (ask anyone who knows me well). I think I understand what you mean about "claiming someone else's comments as her own" and agree that this is wrong. From looking at Zana's past "contributions" it's also clear that her style of humur does not always match that of others (ref the gobshite of the month nomination plus various other comments). I can also see from the ban log that she has been warned in the past for her "style" of behavior, banned, un-banned and banned again on more than one occasion. Banning her for a week due to the "claiming someone else's comments as her own" issue seems reasonably fair to me but I could not help but notice that she now appears to have been given an "indefinite ban".

I have no idea what an "indefinite ban" is but I guess it means never to be allowed back under her "Zana Dark profile" (if I know the Internet and Internet users it would be surprise if she is not back in another form). Perhaps the Uncyc community considers that she had the ban coming and that's fair enough, like I said I have no idea what the norm is around here. My problem is that although you say the current ban was not due to me I can't help but think that in many ways it was...

Zana and myself had begun communicating two days before the incidents which caused the ban and she was aware that I am not new to technology. In my mind this makes me fair game for a bit of cyber bullying or n00b mocking as long as it's done in good fun (which it was). Especially as I had previously asked her to "show me your tits", and for that matter I even heard a rumor that a bureaucrat once "pretended" to be someone else, but that might be "pants"... I guess some of my comments during the incidents which got her banned may have appeared to an onlooker as a n00b in distress, and that Zana was "up to her old tricks". This attracted the (very welcome and well meaning attention) of a number of users (yourself included) who came to my aid. This process actually genuinely amazed me and I know see there is far more to this place than I initially thought...

I think I feel the need to defend Zana on this one as she was actually the first person from the Unsyc community to make me feel welcome after my arrival. When I first arrived here I created a number of (rather rubbish) articles which where quickly deleted in what for me at the time appeared to be a rather flippant manor. It looked to me like they had not even been read and no coherent explanation was given as to what was going on. Now that I know about sandboxes, the batch delete scripts which admins use (to huff my shite) and the template to identify a work in progress I understand a bit more of what's going on... My point is that Zana's actions (in this situation) in my eyes appear to me to be far less offensive than my initial "welcome" via fire. Had Zana not made the effort to contact me when she did I think I would have left uncyc thinking that it was a rather closed society not welcoming of newcomers.

Please could you re-consider the "indefinite ban" between yourself and the others involved and perhaps consider something less lengthy. Although Zana may have been heading for an indefinite ban without my involvement I would hate it if it happened due to this incident....

Ok, I'm sorry for such a long rant, but the wildebeest has been standing on my foot the whole time, and would not let me leave the keyboard until I had typed it all in. Also we both (of course) acknowledge that all of the above may be (as we Brits say) "Complete Bollocks". In which case fair enough! MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 00:25, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

I guarantee you that your conscience has nothing to worry about. Personally, I didn't delve deep enough to see anything that might have been considered Zana bullying you. However, yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting Zana on IRC where she proceeded, instantly, to yell, insult and sling obscenities at me. All my attempts to discuss things in a civil fashion were ignored with more yelling, insults and obscenities. Based on her behavior towards me, I have absolutely no interest in doing anything on her behalf. As far as the indefinite ban goes, having not been around for a while, I will defer to Zombiebaron's knowledge of Zana's history in justifying his actions. Simply put, Zana broke our rules and was hugely unpleasant so now she is reaping what she sowed. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 02:48, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

My premature deletion

Gwax, please respond to this at ADDRESS REMOVED.

Just yesterday (Nov. 18 2007) I started making an article of Seth MacFarlane.

I checked to see if there already was such article, and it came up negative.

When making the article, I added the construction tag. I just threw some ideas around on the page, started to get a little bit done, but it was late so I decided to continue tomorrow and on Thanksgiving weekend.

I favorited the article, and came back to it today. It was deleted. Why was it deleted? It was one day old, under construction, and incomplete. Is there something else I need to do to prevent it from being deleted while still being written?

email me to respond, please. --Mrpastry909 15:59, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I will be happy to tell you why your article on Seth MacFarlane was likely deleted but allow me to make a few general points first.
Firstly, e-mail is not the appropriate avenue for such discussions; that is what talk pages are for. Furthermore, it is generally considered poor form and a bad idea to put your e-mail address up on this site.
Moving on to some general principles of Uncyclopedia that will make it more likely that your content will not be deleted. To start, Starnestommy has left you some very good advice on your talk page; I highly recommend following it, especially reading the Beginner's Guide and especially, especially, especially reading How to be funny and not just stupid. Additionally, it is generally recommended that new users do not write new articles until they have become acclimated to Uncyclopedia. The best way to become acclimated is to read through the best we have to offer to get a feel for what is considered good content. After that, start small; add some humor or improve the quality of an existing article. Just remember, quality not quantity.
As a specific comment on some of your other edits, in general you should avoid adding so-called "quotes" to a page; they are very rarely funny and we have been trying to cut back on them around here. Really, everything goes back to How to be funny and not just stupid.
Ok, now, as far as your particular article on Seth MacFarlane is concerned, I'm afraid that it's a rather perfect example of being stupid and not funny. It is not my desire to be negative but proper humor tends to derive from truth not random untruths. Other than the Family Guy reference at the beginning there was nothing in your article that made it specific to Seth MacFarlane and as such there is a lack of Seth MacFarlane humor. Take, for example, the article on Napoleon Bonaparte: Seth MacFarlane would not be funny in place of Napoleon there but Napoleon is very funny there because of all of the almost truths and jokes about truths. Your Seth MacFarlane article, however, had none of that specific humor. Ask yourself where the correct place for a 9/11 joke is; on the Seth MacFarlane page or on the 9/11 page? Just to be clear, a Seth MacFarlane joke is not funny on the 9/11 page either so there really is no place anywhere for a Seth MacFarlane 9/11 joke.
I hope that I haven't scared you away; I don't want to be mean. That said, please do make an effort to learn our style and our ways if you would like to contribute here. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 04:18, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks again for the information Gwax, I didn't know that.

My Userpage does not work at all. Whenever I click on it it says that it doesn't exist or I should refresh the page, which does not work at all, and I want to put the adopt me thing on my userpage.

Ugh, I try to be funny but it doesn't work out all the time, and I plan on being a writer for a TV show, since I'm pretty good at that. --Mrpastry909 19:57, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Your userpage is just like any other page, you have to edit it for it to exist. One of the nice things about userpages is that they are yours and nobody will delete your user page for not meeting standards, making it a very good place to try things out. You can even create sub pages to try things out or prepare articles without risk of deletion (for example, User:Mrpastry909/My first article). Don't be too disheartened, especially good funny, takes time and practice. If you would like some advice or help, allow me to recommend seeking adoption/apprenticeship under a more experienced user or asking around the chat room.
One last thing, when writing messages in forums or on talk pages, it is customary to sign the end so people know who is talking. This is done by ending with "--~~~~" minus the quotes. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 04:49, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Shall I give it a Go??

Hea Sir gwax. Hope your keeping well... From what I can tell you might be a good person to speak to about this... You might remember a while ago I was having a whinge about the "Beginners Guide" being a bit poor. I think you were well aware of the problem, and agreed that it did need some work. Well rather than wining about it any more I have decided to offer my services and make an attempt to "re-write" some parts of it a little. Hopefully some people might think that a N00b of about 20 days or so may actually be a good person to do this. There are a few key points which I think are missing, and some things I think new users need to know.

In particular the correct use of sandboxes and managing your own user space does not appear to be covered very well to me. Also I think people need to be made more aware of just how brutal the huffing process can be so that they don't get quickly put off when they first get here. In my opinion we loose quite a lot of potentially good users before they get a chance to "settle in" to the way things work around here. I have seen quite a few articles created by new users which I think have great potential, but need lots of work (which I think they intend to do). These articles are then often quickly sent to QVFD and are deleted by the time the user returns. If they do check the deletion log it often says the same message as all the other 20 articles which the admin huffed at the same time. At which point I believe a lot of people simply leave Uncyc thinking us to not be welcoming of new (stupid) users and leave. I know. I almost did. If the user knew about sandboxes and user spaces they would not have moved the article into the main space until it was a bit less likely to get huffed on site.

Obviously I would not be able to do this on the actual pages, but would take a copy of the current guide and work on it in my user space. If my modifications were considered useful then I guess someone such as yourself could modify the actual guide appropriately..

I have no idea if my offer would be a welcome one, and really have no idea who to ask. The village dump defiantly did not appear to be a good place to ask... javascript:qeSubmit(0) SubmitYou appear to be one of the more sane users around here, so I'm asking you.

(Is that more subtle?) Only joking...

Also, just for your info, the link at the bottom of Beginner's_Guide/Obvious appears to be currently invalid.

Please let me know what you think... MrN Icons-flag-gb.png

I think that your suggestion is a marvelous one. I've been considering doing very precisely that myself but I'm terribly poor at getting around to things. You're also quite right that being new puts you in a particularly apt position to pull this off. I am behind you 100% on this one.
If you want to do this, here's what I recommend. In your Userspace, make up a draft new beginner's guide. Subsequently, I'll give your drafts a read through and edit. After that, we'll open things up to the other admins and users in good standing. This should give us a good replacement for the beginner's guide and we can scrap the old one.
In your draft, try to be clear, concise and complete. Spearhead this right and I'll do everything in my power to make sure that you make Uncyclopedian of the Month. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 00:48, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Cool. I will see what I can do... MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 02:31, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

RE-your comment about QVFD

Ahh, I was under the impression that QVFD could only be used for new articles. Am I correct in saying that assuming sensible judgements (like the kinda things I mentioned) have been made regarding an "old" article then "I", as in anyone can send it to QVFD without bothering with VFD no matter how old it is??? Maybe I got the wrong idea somehow. Thanks in advance MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 00:46, Dec 6

Only if it's proper QVFD material, which is to say total crap. I don't necessarily speak for the other admins though, and some of them handle QVFD differently from me. Probably best to pay attention to what the other people say, especially since you're new here and new users don't get as much leeway as more experienced ones. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 06:04, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Better still, check this discussion. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 06:08, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
Ahh, The issue is still "unresolved" I see. Thanks. I will pay attention to that forum, and see what happens. In the mean time, I will not QVFD anything which is older than a week. MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 09:38, Dec 7

Hea, It's the one who pesters you again

I have been working on the beginners guide a little, and have a few issues to resolve but that's another story... I'm just letting you know that Cajek and myself have been making a few, well, rather a lot of changes to the Uncyclopedia:Pee Review/Guidelines. Most of the work was done in my sandbox, but it has now been posted to the actual location of the guide. I just wondered if you might be so good as to take a look over what we have done. Possibly some of it may be a little controversial, and would be very grateful if you would take a look...

If you were able to take a look at it I would be grateful.

On another note, I had a look at your 'to-do' list some interesting issues there, I'm glad someone is looking into them. The cheese issue is particularly concerning... MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 19:06, Dec 8

Scratch all that! Sorry gwax. There is now a forum post in the dump: Forum:Pee Review Guidelines MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 21:41, Dec 8

In the future, seeing as I appear to know my way around here far better than you do and you seem to want my help, I'd prefer not to be called an idiot. --Sir gwax (talk) Signuke.gif 08:14, 26 December 2007 (UTC)
