For those without comedic tastes, the so-called experts at Wikipedia have an article about Bobby Riggs.

Bobby Riggs, born Roberta Flock Riggs in 1931, was a superb athlete, feminist activist, and Tamia impersonator.

Her best remembered exploit was a highly publicized tennis match in 1974, when at the age of 43 she beat the reigning Men's Champion William Jean King, age 25 and at his peak, in straight sets.

After this event, most major men's sports leagues starting closing their doors to women, who would have rendered the men's participation useless by drubbing them regularly.
