A diet is a ritualistic self-depravation and starvation ceremony occasionally used by Buddhist monks. In order to show devotion to Buddha, these monks will go on diets, not eating or drinking for weeks. Normal people would die, but meditation allows them to stay alive, getting ever closer to Nirvana.
