On Communication Methods[edit]

So far (the story by talk page)...

“Well, seriously. I think it would be nice to set up a meeting between the ambassadors in order to just talk, or talk about something important, you decide. Maybe IRC or MSN (I think IRC would be better, as it offers more control to the chanops, and there's ppl like u who don't use MSN.”

~ Fire Wolf on what we should do next

Which was followed by...

“The idea of the meeting is great, but I usually don't like chats, there is always too much chaos, and I'm not even sure I have so much time to share (chat sessions can be very very long). I think the discussion of the page could be the better place to take note of every idea, and solves the problem of time too.”

~ MFH on the suggestion of IRC chatting

...and was supported by...

“I agree with MFH that any important things should be put down in the discussion page in any case. A chat is nice for dreaming up and developing ideas.”

~ Natural Born Kieler on the distinction between the purposes of the discussion page and IRC

Now for more ideas... who's next? Please individually state your ideal means of communication and when you are most likely to be able to access any "live chat" (msn, irc etc.):

  • I can use IRC (but preferably not MSN/Skype, that's far too awkward in my opinion) and do not have any specific times I would be unavailable. Ideal for me would be a regular (1 or 2 sessions a week, 30 mins or something) on IRC to keep things flowing, with obvious constant access to this page. My timezone is GMT. --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 22:26, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
  • For me all you want to do is ok.--Wiki it.png Magnus Wiki it.png

Wiki it.png 22:42, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

  • 1 or 2 sessions a week? Are you joking? I think that's too much, we are here to help our users orientating, why do we need so many meetings? The job's simple, and I don't have the time to organize meetings, I have to study, work, and administrate Nonciclopedia, and I do all quite randomly. Isn't that a little bit exagerate? We just need to advertise this project, I suggest in the sidebar, or somewhere related, and we have to help for translations. I don't think we need all these meetings. --MFH (talk) 22:53, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
    • Actually, I chose two because it could be alternating for those that couldn't make one. It would actually work out more like 1 every fortnight since I think the chances of all ambassadors being in the same place at one time is very slim. It's much more likely to be 3 "meetings" (I mean more like a chat) a fortnight, with 4-5 people perhaps in each one, especially when things are still pretty new and this inter-lingual thing could have more potential than just translation. Unlike this page, it wouldn't be entirely work-oriented either, it would be more far more informal. --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 22:56, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
      • Ok then, but it's quite unefficient. We discuss with part of the group, and then with another part, so we have to tell the first part about the ideas that came out in the second session, and so on. Can't we simply use this discussion? Every information will be stored in this page, so everybody can expose his own ideas at every time, and car read everything the other users proposed. It's a lot simpler. --MFH (talk) 23:08, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
        • Yes I understand your point, it's just about having the option to talk about things (not the most important things though) in a different way. Some people have shown an interest in IRC, so if people are more comfortable with that, I can't see the problem. Sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound like these meetings would be compulsory, they're informal more than anything and just for discussing new ideas and socialising with other uncyclopedia, not legislation or anything. --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 23:15, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
          • I think a chat like IRC, Skype or MSN is good for brainstorming, but more important discussions who is ment for taking decisions, is best to take on a discussion-page like this. That's how I see it--Howie 23:21, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
            • That's a far better justification of it that anything I said... :p --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 23:25, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
              • Agreed :-) Praetorian 23:28, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
                • Sorry, I read what I wrote, and it seems quite aggressive. It was not meant. I was just surprised about this system, I'm not used to it. We have an external forum instead of a chat, and it works greatly, but in this case it would surely not be the right idea. I'll see what's coming up then. --MFH (talk) 23:33, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
  • No problem MFH, I think I over emphasized the chat aspect anyway. What might be best is just to have the option of chat whenever. If there was one channel we always knew was active and could go to use when we needed to (rather than having a schedule), we could just say "OK, lets go to IRC". Of course we wouldn't talk about critical matters there, only ideas and suggestions for further projects and off-shoots of The Foreign Office, therefore if someone was unable to come, they wouldn't have to (if it was important we could just copy+paste the important sections here). The important thing is knowing we have a mutual chat we can all visit at will.--El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 23:40, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
    • If you choose MSN, I can create a group, which you'll add just like a common contact, but with moderators (if you want) and/or moderation approval in order to join. About the time I'm available, it's from midnight until 3 am for workdays and saturdays (GMT), and midday to 3 am on the sundays and holidays. Actually I'm GMT -3, but I'm already converting to you all ;) I'm available on that time because I work, study, and have a girlfriend and I have only 17 yrs old, meaning that I'm losing my teenagehood (this word exists?) Fire_Wolf_br Cookies? 00:43, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
      • I don't think that word exists, but you're always free to invent it. OK I'll note that. I would support the MSN thing as an option assuming it's simple, easy to use and doesn't make any annoying noises every time there is a notification ;) Not sure about everyone else though, I think for most people ease of use is most important, something that isn't too redundant --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 00:50, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Time Difference[edit]

    • Mates, don't you forget one important thing in using IRC nor MSN, time difference. I'm not sure where you are in this world, but I'm sure Siddhartha is in UK. Now, I'm in Australia and Time different between Australia and UK is almost half a day, mates. And we also get one from Brazil, too. One other words, while some just wake up, others may about going to bed and some is away to work or study. With this, it is difficult to organise the meeting on IRC or MSN. --Brandy Frisky 13:24, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
      • Brandy makes a good point, it would perhaps be advisable to have 2 times we could chat? There are other East Asians here too (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, although I will assume Praetorian is in the west of Russia, so he's with us), so there is room there for a discussion. How about everyone writes their timezones below?
        • Also what's the time difference between South America and East Asia? Could they both be put in the same time zone? In Brazil it could be evening while it is late morning in Australia? That's not too bad...

Time Zones

  • GMT (more or less, BST is very confusing) --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 13:31, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
  • GMT+04:00 (or MSD). So I'm in the west of Russia and more with Westerners. But I can chat with East-Asians, if not too late (e.g. at Tokyo midnight). Praetorian 14:39, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
  • GMT + 1 (Central European Time).
  • GMT + 9:30 ( +10:30 DST, around first 2 quaters of year) I'm in South Australia. Brandy Frisky
  • GMT + 2 (right in the middle, meaning we can talk with European and Asians) RaymondAK-47talk - Over my dead, partly decomposed, raped body! 13:00, November 9, 2009 (UTC)

Just waiting ^^ Fire_Wolf_br Cookies? 03:33, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm easy either way. I like what you guys on Desciclopedia have done with MSN, but for some people here who will only make casual visits it might be a little inaccessible. If you could set up something like you have on Desciclopedia though, it would be very interesting. The Italians are devising a forum thing as well as an Embassy portal of some sort, so between the three (The Assembly, The Forum and a chat option) we should have everything covered. --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 16:08, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I know. IRC would be easier, but the odds of someone who we don't want to be there would be greater. I'm one of the current DP's Chat Inquisitors, so I know how to set up another chat channel like the one we have. Actually there we have four channels: the main (for IPs, etc.), the 2nd (in case the first is on maintenance), the 3rd (restricted, for ppl with 600+ edits) and the Debate Room (only for serious subjects, with very few members). Just saying this to explain how the things work there, but we can set up just one (two aren't needed). Fire_Wolf_br Cookies? 01:21, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't think most people have a MSN/hotmail account. I don't have one, for ideological as well as practical reasons: all communication would go through and be recorded by Microsoft's servers, one is legally obliged to use MSN/Live messenger because any other client (pidgin for instance) able to connect to microsoft's server is doing it illegally, if microsoft decides to stop MSN tommorrow he can do it...etc.
IRC is in my opinion a less "childish" and more "professionnal" instant messaging system. And Jabber is the growing new open network protocol compatible with google talk (actually google talk is using the same xmpp protocol). Here is a webgate to the french speaking desencyclopedie chatroom: [1]. --PiRK 01:49, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Much earlier, two or three years ago, we at Absurdopedia used IRC too. Today, 99,9% of current users even don't know about it :-) A scary story. But I don't have any restrictions for programs, so I'll do as the community says :-) Praetorian 04:25, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Well Fire_Wolf, if we had the #channel advertised in here, then only people who were genuinely interested would join anyway. I haven't used MSN in about a year, and the idea of setting up a new account (because the one I have at the moment uses my real name and I'm a pseudonym man ;)) is quite discouraging. --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 09:29, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Also, I popped by what I assume was Jabber (the French chatroom) yesterday, but it was past bedtime and there was only one guy in there. Anyway, the point is that it did look quite good, so I'll put my name there for now, but I'd go with IRC too--El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 09:46, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Never used Jabber. I use MSN because it's our national choice (IM:Live Messenger, social site: orkut), so I'll change my vote for IRC. Fire_Wolf_br Cookies? 18:50, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
I rejected both MSN, IRC and Jabber; due to time gap between us, which makes thing difficult. Anyway, I get MSN account. --Brandy Frisky 13:32, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Time constraints could be worked around, especially for a one-off meeting in which we set the plans for the whole Foreign Office idea (it doesn't need to be regular). --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 13:43, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Also PiRK put this in the talk page, but noone ever goes there so I'll post it here:

Here is my useless contribution to the debate : IRC was a nice tool in the 1970s, but nowadays there is a much better tool called jabber (or xmpp) available. The French uncyclopedia has been using it for more than 6 months, and so far we are quite happy about the change compared to the old IRC. --PiRK 22:45, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Changed my vote so we can go on. Can a Jabber gentleman please set up the thing? TIA. Also, the Embassy rebuild was approved on Desciclopédia and I'm taking care of it. Fire_Wolf_br Cookies? 02:47, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Embassies on our uncys[edit]

We at Nonciclopedia are working on our embassy, so that our users can fully understand this project. It would be nice if every Uncy uses the same structure we are preparing. What do you think about? It would indeed be nice, I would definitely support it. Tell us when you have a design and I'll see if anyone here is willing to implement it. lol, I'm still waiting for some responses from the first question (the chat idea), what do you think we should do Lars? I think we should use the Assembly for now and if we get to community chatter, we could make a Foreign Office/Community page. <poll> Meeting Time (GMT) 07:00 - 11:00 (including 11:00 - 11:59...) 12:00 - 16:00 (see above) 17:00 - 21:00 22:00 - 02:00 03:00 - 06:00 (do NOT click this option, thanks :)) </poll>

For me, it's perfect Saturday, 23h onwards, or Sunday, anytime. However, I can do something to be online @ saturdays, 19h onwards. Cheers, Fire_Wolf_br 12:55, November 9, 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry but I'm quite busy with the university, I'm not going to take part to the meeting, my situation is quite complicated. @Lars: I'm still translating the last part of Galileo Galilei, don't worry. ;) --MFH (talk) 14:23, November 9, 2009 (UTC)
No problem MFH, good luck, will there be an Italian representative available for a meeting though? --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 14:32, November 9, 2009 (UTC)
I'm still translating the first part, don't worry. ;) Write on! Lars - Nederland en Vlaanderen - De Staten-Generaal 16:35, November 9, 2009 (UTC)

Nine o'clock GMT is midnight in my time zone. But it won't bother me if the meeting is on Saturday :-) Yet, BrandyFrisky and SunnyChow will have to sit up all night or wake up very early. — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 17:04, November 9, 2009 (UTC)

I'm very sorry, colleagues, but I'll not be able to participate in a meeting the next weeks (or maybe months). -- Zyniker 07:48, November 10, 2009 (UTC)
By the way, I translated Negative potato for German unc. As soon as I've found some nice pictures (license stuff) this mathematical masterpiece will be available in three languages. -- Zyniker 07:54, November 10, 2009 (UTC)
No problem Zyniker, do you think you could send over someone to represent yourselves for the meeting though? I mean, we will make any conclusions we do come to public on here, but it would be good to have someone to represent the German uncyc to bring any issues you have to the meeting as well... --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 11:04, November 10, 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, otherwise you guys might find it a Versailles Diktat and make a Third World War and stuff... ;) | Write on! Lars - Nederland en Vlaanderen - De Staten-Generaal | 13:45, November 10, 2009 (UTC)
Yeah and if that happens, I'm not even going to pretend to care about Poland this time, you can have it! ;) --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 10:23, November 11, 2009 (UTC)
I saw the map of Germany after third world war in the english article, so I think this time someone else should start it. I think NaturalBornKieler will be there, I suppose I just wanted myself make a bit more important. Thats the good thing if there are two ambassadors: One can do all the work and the other can blame him after all. -- Zyniker 14:45, November 11, 2009 (UTC)

A few words about our meeting server. Should we use that, owned by Desencyclopedie, or find some else? — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 12:58, November 11, 2009 (UTC)

Well, I guess that we can try to test their tolerance by just using it. If they want us out, they can just give us the directions to an own server. | Write on! Lars - Nederland en Vlaanderen - De Staten-Generaal | 16:53, November 11, 2009 (UTC)
Ah well. After two hours of troubleshooting I succeeded in entering Desencyclopedie room. — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 00:25, November 12, 2009 (UTC)
I can create a new channel right away if you want me to. Just tell me what name you want for it. I think jabberfr.org is a good server, more stable than jabber.org for example. But there must be other available servers on the World wide web. We could probably even ask wikia to host its own one. --PiRK 08:31, November 14, 2009 (UTC)

Past Conversations[edit]

Well, I think this is settled. — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 15:11, November 13, 2009 (UTC)

Settled indeed! Who wants to communicate the good news to all our wonderful ambassadors? :D --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 22:11, November 13, 2009 (UTC)
I sent a message to Lars, Fire_Wolf_br, PiRK and Kurraudo. We still have to communicate to Uncyclopedia.de, Nonciclopedia and anyone else who voted. Sid, are you in touch with them? — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 00:19, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
If it's possible to happen on the other saturday... This one I'll be busy. Fire_Wolf_br aka 23:59, November 13, 2009 (UTC)
Sure, I guess next Saturday is best. Oh, and Praetorian, I'll message all the other Uncycs tomorrow, including the ones that hate us. The Czechs especially would be valued. --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 01:09, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
Hi. Sorry I didn't find the time to participate to the debate. I guess it's OK to use [email protected] Anyway, it takes about 15 seconds to create a new channel if needed. Just a small detail: the french ambassador is supposed to be Wiikend as far as I know. I will forward him the message, but I might also be available to participate to that meeting. --PiRK 08:14, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
Message received. So, it will be this Saturday (Today) or the next one? --Kurraudo 11:44, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
Next, I think (and Sid said so). We'll have more time to prepare and to inform all the Ambassadors. To everybody: if the inhabitants of Desencyclopedie room refuse to have us as guests, there will be a channel on jabber.org, called the.foreign.office. Created just now, protected by password (foreignoffice, if it would ask). — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 12:26, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
Who refused? Anyway, I don't recommend jabber.org because this server is supposed to be quite unstable (according to [2]), and also I don't know if jabber.org offers an web client like the one on jabberfr.org. This means that all ambassadors might need to learn how to configure an Xmpp client instead of just having to click on a weblink and enter a nickname. PiRK 15:27, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
Oh. Well, the room there is now created at the address you wrote. The information above is updated. — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 16:43, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
I get this weird error message when I try to connect to the room: Nicknames locked: please use your username instead. What exactly is my username? --PiRK 20:53, November 14, 2009 (UTC)
Blame me. I locked nicknames to JID by accident. Should I contact the administration? — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 10:53, November 15, 2009 (UTC)
Excuse my French
Can you still access the room? I should be easy to change the configuration if you can login with the JID you used to create it. With gajim you just need to connect to the room and right click on the room name. --PiRK 08:06, November 17, 2009 (UTC)
I can't install it. Either newer or older versions. My Psi refuses to configure the room, so does Pidgin. Could someone with Gajim enter and change? — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 18:05, November 17, 2009 (UTC)
I could, but I would need to access the room using as an "owner". So if you cannot add my JID to the owners list the only way I could help is if you give lend me your JID and password. If you trust me enough you can send me an email: special:EmailUser/PiRK. --PiRK 21:37, November 17, 2009 (UTC)
File:Config room psi.png
Excuse my French
I just installed Psi 0.13 and I can configure my rooms without a problem... --PiRK 21:53, November 17, 2009 (UTC)
Sent you a letter with excuses about Server and Channel change. — Praetorian the Glorious Strategist. 22:54, November 17, 2009 (UTC)

I created a new (temporary?) room here: [email protected]. I suggest we use the first meeting to decide how to actually name and configure the room (password needed? invitation needed to join? moderators?). In the meantime, this room is public (everybody can search for the room, join and participate without invitation), and limited to 50 participants and logged. Jabber IDs are visible only to the moderators.

We managed to get [email protected] back. --PiRK 12:43, November 19, 2009 (UTC)

Anybody who is interested in becoming moderator or owner of the room needs to learn how to use a Jabber client: tutorial for Psi, QuickStart Guide for Gajim, it is also possible to use Pidgin but the current versions don't allow yet to access advanced XMPP features (room configuration, sharing files...). Everybody else can continue being braindead and just use the webgate: [email protected]. --PiRK 10:40, November 19, 2009 (UTC)

Ok, all set. --El Sid, the lazy oneparlez-vous franglais? 01:02, November 21, 2009 (UTC)
