Hi Sannse.

I recently cleaned up a backlog of links from File:Example.jpg and I was wondering if it would be possible to block the actual filename from being added to articles? This has apparently been a long-running problem and its frequently inserted into articles, either by vandals or inexperienced editors, via the toolbar's "embedded file" feature. MadMax 05:16, January 3, 2010 (UTC)
I would be against adding stuff to a blacklist: if by blacklist, you mean spamfilter, because spamfilter tripping is potentially more annoying than clutter. I.e. one must correct all spamfilter-tripping code in order to save a page. Ideally, I would suggest something that would "hide" the link to the file so the red link doesn't appear. Failing that, I would suggest a text based image with something allong the lines of "please insert a correct image name" or something. --Mn-z 05:31, January 3, 2010 (UTC)

I want to change my username[edit]

And yes, I've read the guide, I know that it can only be done once, and I realise that it may implode the universe. Now, can I change my name to an already existing name? I want to change it to Fred, as it's my real life nickname and all, and I don't like the name Mahm00shA anymore. So, is it possible? User:Mahm00shA/Sig • 06:37 • Sunday, 3-01-2010

Special:Contributions/Fred has contributions but is nearly 5 years inactive. Perhaps it can be usurped? --User:Charitwo/sig 06:40, January 3, 2010 (UTC)

I know it's ordinary. The point is, I feel embarassed showing my uncyclopedia account to my friends with that stupid name I've got. Fredd is cool I guess. Also, no it's not "it's just me yes?" your opinion matters. Seriously, if you don't want me to change it OR you have another name in mind, say it :) User:Mahm00shA/Sig • 17:36 • Sunday, 3-01-2010

Something Something Something Namechange[edit]

A little bird told me, before crapping on my shoulder, that you are the guy to go to if you want your name changed. I'd very much like it if you could shorten my name down to "Matfen", as that is how many seem to refer to me on here, almost no-one uses numbers in their name on Uncyc, and I have forgotten what the numbers were in reference to. Thanks. Sorry if I am perpetuating a trend btw. --User:Matfen815/sig 16:18, January 9, 2010 (UTC)

Whine whine whine[edit]

What's the deal with all the spambots? I've seen more "mejores paginas del mundo" than I care to count, which isn't a lot as I'm rather lazy. Maybe it's time to, dare I speak it, add an extra letter to the captchas? User:Syndrome/sig 07:01, January 18, 2010 (UTC)

Remember all the whinging about the spam blacklist? And how I got the local one activated and the global one turned off for here? That means it's all officially your problem. Yay! -- User:Sannse/Sig 02:38, January 26, 2010 (UTC)
I thought the spam blacklist was just stopping us from putting penises in edit summaries. But if you say so. User:Syndrome/sig 21:09, January 26, 2010 (UTC)
Special:SpamRegex allows you to block any text from edit summaries or article content. The point is that Uncyc is no longer protected by the global version (because of the whole penis thing). So if you get loads of spammers adding repetitive text, it's because you haven't put the right terms in the local version. Ya see? -- User:Sannse/Sig-w 23:16, January 27, 2010 (UTC)
Cool. I'm off to pester Mordillo or Spang about it, then. User:Syndrome/sig 06:40, January 28, 2010 (UTC)
Hello there, I've been pestered by the above pesterer (pestree?) but the special:SpamRegex is limited to Staff and VSTF members. Can you sort that out so I can update it? Thanks. User:Mordillo/sig3 09:44, January 28, 2010 (UTC)
I think it's you and I that are the pesterees, and he's the pesterer. Although you are possibly both, so that's extra clever. I've passed on the pestering to Uberfuzzy now, and asked him to tweak the access levels -- User:Sannse/Sig 00:06, January 30, 2010 (UTC)
So the multiple version would be - pestereers?! User:Mordillo/sig3 11:19, January 30, 2010 (UTC)
This is possible. Or I may just have switched off totally with an e overdoes.
So, the access issue should now be fixed. Anyone who wants a hand in using this, let me know or catch me on IRC. The only other issue now is that all admins have the ability to block the word "the" from being used in any article. As far as I'm concerned, this is officially Somebody Else's Problem. Yay!
Also, with my admin hat on, I'm now off to block all edit summaries containing more than one A in a row \o/ - User:Sannse/Sig-w 19:25, February 1, 2010 (UTC)
Lo again! This works perfectly, but who can I ask regarding some more advanced syntax (such as using wildcards etc)? User:Mordillo/sig3 11:04, February 5, 2010 (UTC)

Child Abuse[edit]

I'm concerned about the photo used in context with the article here. There are media guidelines and legal protection against the real-life underage victims of sexual abuse being identified; I wonder if making a claim, even as a joke, that a child, especially a non-celebrity, featured in a photo was sexually abused is legal. Even if it's not criminally illegal, it could possibly be grounds for a lawsuit. Even beyond that, I have to ask--how would the parents feel? Thanks for looking into this. Hi guys and Sannse. :-) Yea, um... Pictures of children on Uncyc is fine. Pictures of children in an article about paedophiles is very dodgy... That picture with that caption... No. Not a chance. That new image is much better. Hopefully next time Template:U you will talk to me or another sysop before you go bothering Sannse. It makes you look like like... ... Anyway, let's keep that new image, and nothing else needs to be done. MrN Icons-flag-gb.png 23:20, Jan 21
MrN9000, I'd be happy talking to you. But when a similar issue came up before, I tried talking about it with an admin, and got chewed out for doing so. The next time I tried dealing with an issue without going to an admin, and it became a fire fest on Unc, IRC, etc., and I was told I should have talked to an admin or Sannse. The next time I approached an admin about a similiar issue, I got threatened with getting blocked (and later was blocked for talking to a non-admin about avoiding a future problem). I got told in the future to talk to Sannse about such a problem before it became a big issue, so that's what I did this time. Now you suggest I don't. I'll tell you, it's trying to follow everybody's advice that's made me the *%*(%#! I am. :-) Rabbi Why do I need to provide this?, humble goylem rabbi of the Temple of Narishkayt and rector of The University of Uncyclopedia, Whynersville Rabbi WHY??? He refers to [1] primarily which was the latest in several occasions. Let's put things straight here yes? You were never told not to talk to admins and talk to sannse when you have a problem. You were told, by me, to stop lecturing and start talking. Perhaps it is just your style of conversing, which is fine, but you can imagine it can be annoying to be lectured on a weekly basis from someone who claims one day that he is a noob (and acts like one) and then another day claims to be a 10 year wiki veteran, and switches between those capes whenever that suits him. I've also mentioned that you are always welcome to talk with me whenever you need when you have a problem concerning yourself, rather than playing the caped crusader. Other than that, there are numerous admins here you can always talk with if you don't want to talk with me, for obvious reasons. So, to summarize, no one ever told you not to talk with admins and no one told you to talk with sannse, as staff, by default. If you want to talk to her as one of the admins, that's your own choice. I hope everything is crystal clear now. User:Mordillo/sig3 08:35, January 22, 2010 (UTC)
Your position seems pretty clear to me, but I've seen a great deal of inconsistency on this site, which happens when you have several people together with no one in total control. I don't intend to defend myself as I don't believe that will help, other than to say I was honestly concerned and trying not to piss anyone off--obviously, at that I failed. As for the noob vs. 10 years experienced, my intent was to say I do have significant experience with wikis while at the same time admitting I'm new here and am just learning the ropes--every wiki is different. Obviously, that didn't work very well either, so I've dropped that (except that I do mention it on my user page, but have stopped doing it in posts). As for "playing the caped crusader," I'm trying to moderate that here and keep it in line, but frankly, that's me. If you think I've gotten myself in trouble here playing Batman, you should see the trouble I've gotten into in real life. When I type something in Wikia's searchbox, it doesn't show any Uncyclopedia results. Do you know why this is the case? Is it because we don't have ads? Mainly it's because Uncyclopedia is likely to give a result for everything, and that won't be the result someone is likely to be looking for. If they search for World of Warcraft or Pokemon, the probably want a wiki that's actually about that. So for that particular search, we leave Uncyc out of it. -- User:Sannse/Sig 23:32, February 12, 2010 (UTC)

I know it would usually be an admin to ask about this, but...[edit]

What would happen if 92. and later was softblocked? As in anon only. I've been watching that range for a while, ever since an IP from there blanked my userpage. And now, it is the "ChiefjusticeDS is a nigger jew" range. How much collateral damage would result? I know it's a pretty big range, but this is becoming annoying. Thanks.Sir ¬_¬ | Banter HOMOPHOBE!!! Yeah, looks pretty certain. Let me know if you need the underlying IP to block -- User:Sannse/Sig 20:42, April 4, 2010 (UTC)
I can't imagine it's necessary, unless you disagree - the user hadn't been using his/her socks maliciously, so hopefully he/she will stick to the rules and no further action needs to be taken. User:RabbiTechno/sig 20:21, April 5, 2010 (UTC)

I didn't mean to upset you with my comment earlier. It wasn't even directed at you in particular; all I want is transparency from Wikia, and I reserve the right to be boneheaded in demanding it. Here, have a cat in a chicken suit.

User:Syndrome/sig 05:00, April 3, 2010 (UTC)

I also sensed that I may have caused some offence by saying "It seems a dangerous precendent..." when what I meant to say was "Although it may seem a dangerous precedent...blahblah...we don't know what's going on, it might have not been worth the effort and I'm sure Wikia have their reasons." Have a Fox's Glacier Mint as a token of my apologies. :-) User:RabbiTechno/sig 11:43, April 4, 2010 (UTC)

Aww, thanks both. And apologies from me too if I'm a bit snappy... I'm sure you've heard enough of why on IRC (and Syndrome, if you want transparency on that then I'll let blast with the full whinge.)
And on transparency, Syndrome. I totally agree it's important. But I ask that you understand that it is not always possible to talk about every issue publicly - not unless you personally are going to take full financial and practical responsibility for me doing so. If you want to do that, and have the cash and the ability to re-host 100,000 wikis if we get closed because of my indiscretion about some future situation, then please feel free to pop in to the office and draw up a contact with my boss to that effect.
That's not to say I shouldn't have left a message with my deletion - please see the forum etc. for the several times I have apologized for that mistake.
Also, I know I keep repeating this, but I'm not sure you are hearing me: when you say "Wikia", you are saying "sannse". There is no big conspiratorial group that is "Ebil Wikia", just this woman and her team trying to do the right thing for the site and its users. Yes, I have a boss... and I can tell you exactly what he said to me when I brought this specific situation to him this week: "what are yo ugoing to do?" (typo is his ;). I told him I was working on the problem, and we went on to the next thing on my list.
Talking of that list... I really need to get back to that (and to my Sunday). Syndrome: I'll be on IRC later if you want to talk in person -- User:Sannse/Sig-w 21:25, April 4, 2010 (UTC)

Ours do - as well as special little string vests to keep them warm in winter. See User talk:ChiefjusticeDS#Ban. Many users are being autoblocked when the IP addresses listed aren't even theirs. Also, Puppy's comment raises something interesting. Is this a Wikia bug? Or are we just high?User:HELPME/sig2 electric boogalo 01:14, April 30, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry to turn up and nag you about the same thing again, but I've had a number of users complain to me about the same issue again today here and then immediately below. It seems that people are being autoblocked for brief periods of time, for reasons that currently escape me. Would be you be OK to look into this for us? As a staffy person that does staffy things. Thanks. --User:ChiefjusticeDS/sig 16:48, May 4, 2010 (UTC)

Ah, now wait 'till you see Wikia's ideas on talk pages and making them actually work (Monaco only I expect, and not scheduled yet) -- User:Sannse/Sig 03:01, May 9, 2010 (UTC)
Well, it appears that the community here is a huge supporter of change. PuppyOnTheRadio sig.gif                                                  Sunday, 04:24, May 9 2010 UTC

And another thing[edit]

Most users here, myself included, use monobook as our standard screen. This means most users have been unaware of the issue where banner ads have been shown on the site when using a monaco skin. I have discussed this before with admins and they have said that they have taken it up with wiki and it was most likely and oversight. I've now noticed that under the default skin using opera mini that I'm now getting advertising being displayed, which does appear to be contrary to the NC-BY-CC-SA that we write under - most notably the NC part. Is this a bug or is Uncyclopedia going to become a commercially sponsored site? And is the original issue of advertising showing with Monaco skins also being reviewed/rectified? PuppyOnTheRadio sig.gif                                                  Sunday, 06:51, May 9 2010 UTC

Possibly you haven't seen me say before, but I do try to keep reminding people that Uncyclopedia has had ads in the past (before moving to Wikia, and part of the time while on Wikia) and it is certainly not guaranteed that it won't have ads in the future. Hosting Uncyclopedia costs a significant amount of money, and it is not against the license for that hosting to be paid for by ads (as it is on other -nc wikis on Wikia). Monaco and the mobile skin both have ads by default, and that has never been changed for Uncyclopedia. That's not an oversight, it's just how the skins are built for all wikis (as I said to those who contacted me about this). There are no current plans to replace the ads on Monobook for Uncyclopedia, although my personal belief is that the current imbalance can't last forever - at some point I think Uncyc will have to go back to contributing for its hosting. -- User:Sannse/Sig-w 08:08, May 9, 2010 (UTC)
Haven't seen it before, so I apologise if I'm belabouring on a moot point. I also wasn't a regular here before Uncyc was hosted by Wikia. On an side note, I've also been advised that the contributions by authors here remain the property of the authors - meaning that Uncyc are unable to publish a "best of uncyclopedia" type of book - which would be my preferred way, if possible, of raising revenue. I don't understand it all completely, but if I were to take the articles I contributed here would I be able to republish them elsewhere for profit? And is the idea of a collection of uncyc material in a book form sold to pay partially to cover the cost of hosting a possibility? PuppyOnTheRadio sig.gif                                                  Sunday, 08:36, May 9 2010 UTC
Yes, the authors of the work hold the copyright, and keep the option of publishing for profit or otherwise. There is a bit of ambiguity over minor contributions... but many articles have one primary author who could give permission for use of the work. That said, publishing a book wouldn't be easy or be likely to be profitable enough to support Uncyclopedia. (Although I don't have current figures for how much it costs to host this site) -- User:Sannse/Sig-w 00:37, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
That's fine - working out if a collection of Uncyclopedic works - given permission from the authors of particular articles - for a potential profit that can be channelled back into raising money for Uncyc would be worthwhile. If, for arguments sake, we were only able to raise $50, then that would at least be $50 more that could be funnelled back into the cost of hosting or towards PLS or who knows what else. If, on the other hand, we are able to advertise on Uncyc in order to raise funds for the cost of hosting, etc, then there is a logic behind actually putting this into practice. I enjoy writing for Uncyc, and I see value in it's existence, so I'm happy to use commercialism to keep it going. But before we can put anything into practice it makes sense to find out what can possibly be done.
